The 50J12 is a reissue of one of the rarest and most coveted amps in Standel circles. A soulful, 18-watt, 12” amplifier that is also a personal favorite here at Standel. The “50” circuit appeared from 1958-1962 as a head and combo, a little brother to the Top O’ the Line 1×15 80L15, as used by Reggie Young with Bill Black’s Combo. Thus, we have donned it “L’il Reggie”.
The 50J12 features a duet of 6V6’s, a “J” for Jensen style speaker, fixed-bias operation, and negative feedback loop – features often associated with Fender, which gives the 50J12 a familiar vibe, while remaining an entirely original Standel design and sound.
The 50J12 delivers rich harmonics and thick, twangy cleans. There is a bite to the attack of this amp that sets it apart from the other Standels, and it breaks up earlier than our other models. It’s a perfect match for any guitar or steel guitar we’ve plugged into it.
The 50J12 features 2 channels – Mellow and Bright, with shared Treble and Bass controls. The 50J12 also features the Standel “Accent” control, a type of Presence control, and a hidden “High Pass Filter” when the Treble control is set low, to achieve silky smooth jazzy tones.
While the 50J12 is delivers rich cleans for country, jazz, roots rock, etc., it clips and overdrives smoothly at moderate volumes. With slightly interactive volumes, turning up the opposite channel’s volume imparts extra gain, while leaving it down low yields extra headroom.
Whisper quiet operation, cool running, ready for studio use and small gigs, the sky is the limit with this inspiring amp. If ever there was an amplifier that makes you want to play endlessly, this is it.
For those wishing for its bigger brother, the 80J15, a 35-watt 6L6 version 1×15” combo is available as an option (please inquire).
